seen: 2026-10-30, mosaic, todarch cube, a value's to-dos on a phone (two to-dos and my own box). selim: "you have two by two, which is a full square, that's fine… but it should take the space available to it. … this representation looks like a 2 by 3… or a 3 by 3. … we decided that we can make the piece bigger and smaller based on the items that we are trying to squeeze in that space. always following the full square size."
picture: in progress, two to-dos and my own box.
breaks: 24 (a face is a complete square) and design decision 23 of the cubes app (a square keeps its size; one piece more zooms it out a step).
why it feels wrong: the tiles had one fixed size (three across on a phone), so a 2 × 2 square took two thirds of the width and the empty third read as a missing column: 2 × 3, or with the rows below, 3 × 3. the square was complete in code and incomplete to the eye. a square is complete only when it fills the place it is given.
how it follows (built the same evening): the todarch cube's tiles work like the cubes app's: the square always takes the width it has (up to the window's height), n × n, and its tiles grow and shrink with it; only what a tile says shrinks (name and line, then the name, then only its small cube). picture after: in progress.
