the tiles had one fixed size (three across on a phone), so a 2 × 2 square took two thirds of the width and the empty third read as a missing column: 2 × 3, or with the rows below, 3 × 3. the square was complete in code and incomplete to the eye. a square is complete only when it fills the place it is given.
